Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent, a time of preparation for the central celebration of the Christian Year: The Day of the Resurrection.
Because it’s a season of preparation for the great Feast of The Resurrection, it includes the study of Scripture, and self-reflection. But this self reflection is in no way a self indulgence, or morose self-absorption for our self reflection is informed by and even shaped by our attending to the Scriptures. In a marvelous way, because of the truth of God spoken to us— the grace of God given— we are freed to acknowledge the truth of ourselves. Without the secure knowledge of the breadth and length and height and depth of God’s love (cf Eph. 3:18) we would not risk opening the truth of our hearts. It is God’s grace that invites our repentance, our turning back to Him.
